Become a NBCA Recognized Breeder

NBCA Recognized Breeders Code of Ethics

  • Provide clean, adequate, safe housing and run areas for both adult dogs and puppies.
  •  Consider the strengths and weaknesses of each potential pairing. Always breed to better the working Border Collie. The NBCA goal is to protect the working Border Collie and the innate abilities and desires therein. Breedings should always be done with this goal in the fore front.
  • Breed dogs that are in good health, temperamentally sound, and free from genetic faults. Health testing prior to breeding can be a beneficial way to limit genetic faults being passed on to future generations. Breeding dogs and puppies should be kept up on appropriate vaccinations and preventative veterinary care.
  • Only breed dogs that are physically and mentally mature enough to breed, and do not continue to breed any male or female that is unfit for breeding in any way.
  • Please make every effort possible to ensure that puppies are in good health and free from genetic defects at the time of sale.
  • Review each prospective new home carefully and carefully place each puppy/dog in an appropriate home.
  • Help to educate prospective homes about the Border Collie and what is required in terms of the amount of exercise, nutrition, training, and socialization needed. Educate potential buyers on the strengths and weaknesses of both parents and any attributes seen in each puppy up to that point.
  • Make both parent dogs available for viewing to potential puppy buyers along with proper registration papers of the parents if requested.
  • Any advertising, whether oral or written, should be factual, not intentionally misleading or false in any way.
  • Breeders should attempt to maintain contact with their puppy’s new owners. Breeders should remain available for guidance, support and help throughout the produced puppies lives. Periodic contact with the current owners of dogs produced can also be a beneficial way for a breeder to evaluate their breeding program and monitor working ability, temperament and health of their puppies produced.

Requirements for becoming an NBCA Recognized Breeder:

  • Read, understand, and agree to the National Border Collie Association llc’s Breeder Code of Ethics. The NBCA feels that breeders who are committed to these standards will ultimately produce happier, healthier Border Collies and thereby continue to promote and preserve the working Border Collie.
  • Fill out and return the NBCA Recognized Breeder’s application form, either ONLINE or BY MAIL.
  • Although not required, the NBCA strongly encourages breeders to utilize the NBCA pedigree database and keep all information of breeding dogs up to date and accurate. This will allow potential buyers to look up breeding stock and see offspring produced to help with more informed decisions.
  • NBCA Recognized breeders are also expected to attempt to resolve complaints and issues with clients and puppy homes in a timely and satisfactory manner.
  • You must agree to the possibility of random inspections of facilities by NBCA personnel. These inspections will ensure that as a breeder you are adhering to the commitment of raising quality dogs in a clean and safe environment and following the guidelines set forth in the Code of Conduct. Information from the inspections will NOT be released or discussed with the public and will remain confidential and private. If you have any questions about inspections- please contact the NBCA office.
